People often find it easier to be a result of the past than a cause of the future.

Welcome to Issue 9!

View/share online

After last week’s issue I received a couple of replies from readers (I assume in response to Tracy Chou’s mention of male/white privilege) saying that they liked the newsletter but didn't want to be given a lesson in morality or politics. I found that quite surprising and a bit ironic given how often I share content on (the lack of) ethics in tech. This issue is no exception, as you can see in the Food for Thought section below.

I believe it’s wrong to separate work and morality. In fact, I think doing that has helped create the mess we’re in right now. I’ve long argued for taking your conscience to work. This doesn’t mean you have to vote for the same party as your boss. It means you should check whether the ethics and values of your employer align with your own. Especially in technology, where the impact of your work is felt by thousands or millions or even billions of people, it’s worth asking yourself more often: is the world I spend eight hours every day creating truly the world I want to live in myself? – Kai

With this app-controlled power strip, you can independently manage six outlets and charge three USB devices. The app also shows you the energy consumption of each outlet. Set individual schedules for each of them to turn on/off devices at a specific time.

Overheard on Twitter

Instagram is down. Thousands of people wander the streets with crude sketches of sunsets screaming hashtags at strangers. People carry their breakfast with them and introduce it to everyone they meet. Chaos ensues. In the distance, sirens.

Food For Thought

The hidden privilege in design →

Read

“It is our responsibility to actively seek the ‘outliers’ that seem to be shrinking data points in the metrics that define our work – data points that are often representatives of entire populations who never seem to make it to the whiteboard as a compelling enough reason to alter a design.”

Life Advice: Don’t Find Your Passion →

Read

Telling students to follow their passion is bad career/life advice: “Rather than searching for their one true passion, they should understand that interests, expertise, and even passion can be cultivated through experience, persistence, and hard work.”

iPhones are hard to use →

Read

An extensive, well-argued list of examples showing how iPhones (and all smartphones, IMO) are becoming increasingly difficult to use. I have plenty of anecdotal evidence based on my mum's growing frustration with her phone, but I'm frequently surprised myself about how many features I come across by an accidental swipe or tap.

'Tech tax' necessary to avoid dystopia, says leading economist →

Read

This is the first time I heard of the concept of a 'tech tax' and based on this short article, it makes a lot of sense to me: “Artificial intelligence can only achieve its potential if its use is determined not by the pressures of private competition, but by a desire to serve the public interest.”
