The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.

Welcome to Issue 55!

View/share online

Wow. A rare moment of hope and agency. In the words of former Australian senator Scott Ludlam: “Watching [the climate strike] roll across the timezones like a wave of defiance is making me feel like I live on a planet, rather than a fragmented jigsaw of angry nationalisms.”

Watching the many photos and videos of people flooding squares and roads across the world still gives me warm and fuzzy feelings today. I want to share two particular images/tweets that made me stop as they appeared in my timeline in quick succession:

The first one is this photo of Greta outside the Swedish parliament. The second one, taken a little over a year later, is a photo of young women striking in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my calls to action with words of support. I understand that not everyone feels as strongly about this issue as I do. (Although I’m afraid it’s only a matter of time until the rest reluctantly awakes.) Anyway, this is a start. The road to system change is an arduous one. Let’s keep the conversation going. Recharge. Reorganise.

Magic Kit →

Modular set of eco bags

The Magic Kit is a backpack, a shoulder bag, and a bum bag made from recycled PET bottles, tire-tubes & cotton scraps, made in Brazil. The three separate bags can be connected through a set of clips and straps, or worn separately for different occasions. I actually emailed them to find out more about their eco credentials (there is a lot of greenwashing out there) and I was positively surprised to hear about their thoughtful material choices.

Radical Technologies →

The Design of Everyday Life

“Everywhere we turn, a startling new device promises to transfigure our lives. But at what cost? In this urgent and revelatory excavation of our Information Age, leading technology thinker Adam Greenfield forces us to reconsider our relationship with the networked objects, services and spaces that define us. It is time to re-evaluate the Silicon Valley consensus determining the future.”

Food For Thought

The creed of compromise →

Read

Do you feel the pressure to ‘follow your dreams’ and get meaning out of every minute of your day? This essay on being OK with compromise – in work and life – might soothe your anxieties: “I wouldn’t dare to advise young idealists either to follow or not to follow their dreams. At the most, I might advise them to be wary of career preachers, whether radical or conservative, and that, while they shouldn’t fear commitment and leaps of faith, they also shouldn’t fear compromise.”

Have You Ever Had an Emotional Cold? →

Read

A case for treating ‘having the blues’ like most other temporary physical health issues: “If a common cold can be natural, inevitable and random, maybe an emotional cold can be too. Perhaps both can offer that rare, almost silly insight into how good it feels to not have a cold, and serve as an opportunity to tend to one’s self.”

Stop Mocking Vegans →

Read

Just like car culture or consumerism, our love for meat was shaped by a long history of marketing, lobbyism, and misinformation that have created deeply engrained and unsustainable societal behaviour patterns. “In the media, in pop culture and even in progressive, enlightened polite society it is still widely acceptable to make fun of vegans. The stereotype of the smug, self-satisfied, annoying vegan has taken deep cultural root. One survey found that vegans are viewed more negatively than atheists and immigrants, and are only slightly more tolerated than drug addicts.”
