Between a looming environmental collapse and the rise of science-denying demagogues, most of us are struggling with our lack of agency. As individuals we often feel powerless. However, in less than four weeks, on September 20, you get a chance to feel more hopeful, if only for a day.
On that Friday, millions of people around the world will go on strike and stop work to draw attention to the climate crisis. And we need everybody to show up! ‘Earth Strike’ is going to be huge. Unions with millions of members in Australia and across Europe are supporting the strike, which will be just the first day of a week-long series of events aimed to disrupt business as usual.
If you’re one of the many people who are frustrated about the lack of action but in the past stopped short of attending protests, I urge you show up to this one. Even to just represent those people who would like to go but can’t get out of work. (As a reminder: research shows that non-violent protest of ‘just’ 3.5% of a population can lead to substantial system change.)
If you are running a business you can increase your impact by encouraging your team to take part and by publicly speaking about and supporting the strike. (Find your closest protest here.) If you want to go a step further, you can even shut down your website for the day to symbolically highlight that ‘business as usual’ is not an option.
September 20 is a rare chance (or responsibility?) to go beyond just retweets and likes. Get out there, make your voice heard, and be part of what may be the biggest global day of action we’ve ever seen.
