As you would have noticed, our environmental crisis is becoming an increasing focus of mine. I believe people working in the tech sector are in a unique position of responsibility to use their skills, tools and reach to help raise awareness and work on possible solutions. As someone who is occupying a fraction of your attention every week, I feel especially responsible to keep the climate emergency on our collective minds. While the news are often bleak, I increasingly come across grass-roots campaigns and small collaborative projects, suggesting a broader shift of focus is happening in our industry.

This weekend I was hunting for a simple website builder tool to recommend to a friend who’s started a new business. Wix, Squarespace and the like all seemed overkill and too expensive, and then I remembered Carrd (featured in DD #17). I set up an account and was really impressed with the features and UI. It’s perfect for a very simple, easily maintainable website.

The Trojan Room coffee pot
To save people working in the old Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge the disappointment of finding the coffee machine empty after making the trip to the so-called Trojan Room, a camera was set up providing a live picture of the coffee pot to all desktop computers on the office network. After the camera was connected to the internet in 1992, the coffee pot gained international notoriety as a feature of the fledgling World Wide Web and became known as the world’s first webcam. It was retired in 2001.
