Thank you once again for the many supportive words to the intro in the previous issue. It’s really uplifting to know that the DD readership does not shy away from challenging topics. I think we’ve only just scratched the surface when it comes to having these difficult conversations about ethics and morality in the tech world. But I'm cautiously optimistic as I outlined in my editor’s note of Offscreen Issue 18.

I rarely use the term ‘agile’ these days. If I mean ‘responsive to change’ or ‘adaptive’, I just say those words. If I mean ‘self-organising’, I say it. If I mean ‘lightweight’, I say that. If I mean ‘cynically exploiting a trend to sell certifications’, I say that.

A product review that ends with ‘Jesus. What's happening to us?’ is worth a read even if you're not in the market for a new phone. I‘ve upated my phone last year too and reading through some reviews at the time I couldn‘t help but think: here I am again believing better/newer specs would make my life/work easier when all it does is upgrade my dependency and addiction.

In this great talk, researcher Brené Brown shows us how vulnerability is at the core of so many of our decisions. One idea of hers that stood out to me is that we cannot selectively numb our feelings which is why when we excessively drink or eat (or spend time online) we're numbing the bad and the good. (Her follow-up talk is also great.)

There is only so far the vegan/vegetarian message can influence long-established thinking about the role of meat in our diet. So rather than replacing meat with plant-based foods, lab-grown meat could very soon ease the pressure on the environment. Here’s an update from the meat labs.
