To be clever enough to get a great deal of money, one must be stupid enough to want it.

Welcome to Issue 10!

View/share online

Thank you once again for the many supportive words to the intro in the previous issue. It’s really uplifting to know that the DD readership does not shy away from challenging topics. I think we’ve only just scratched the surface when it comes to having these difficult conversations about ethics and morality in the tech world. But I'm cautiously optimistic as I outlined in my editor’s note of Offscreen Issue 18.

I’m currently in transit so today’s intro is a bit shorter than usual. Enjoy this issue and have a great week! – Kai

A Magna Carta for the Web

If you believe in an open and fair web, please take five minutes out of your day today to read up on this new campaign by Tim Berners-Lee: the #ForTheWeb campaign reflects on what the web has allowed humanity to accomplish over the past nearly 30 years, examines the current trends that threaten its future, and outlines actions we must take to reverse these trends and ensure that the web remains free and open for everyone:

Company of One →

The antidote to the growth hacking frenzy

Written by Offscreen alumnus Paul Jarvis, Company of One is a book about staying small: ‘The real key to richer and more fulfilling work could be to not create and scale something into a massive corporation, but rather, to work for yourself, determine your own hours, and become a (highly profitable) and sustainable company of one.’ (Pre-order now, release in Jan 2019)

Overheard on Twitter

I rarely use the term ‘agile’ these days. If I mean ‘responsive to change’ or ‘adaptive’, I just say those words. If I mean ‘self-organising’, I say it. If I mean ‘lightweight’, I say that. If I mean ‘cynically exploiting a trend to sell certifications’, I say that.

Food For Thought

The Google Pixel 3 Is A Very Good Phone. But Maybe Phones Have Gone Too Far.  →

Read

A product review that ends with ‘Jesus. What's happening to us?’ is worth a read even if you're not in the market for a new phone. I‘ve upated my phone last year too and reading through some reviews at the time I couldn‘t help but think: here I am again believing better/newer specs would make my life/work easier when all it does is upgrade my dependency and addiction.

The power of vulnerability →

Watch

In this great talk, researcher Brené Brown shows us how vulnerability is at the core of so many of our decisions. One idea of hers that stood out to me is that we cannot selectively numb our feelings which is why when we excessively drink or eat (or spend time online) we're numbing the bad and the good. (Her follow-up talk is also great.)

The Fat of the Lab →

Read

There is only so far the vegan/vegetarian message can influence long-established thinking about the role of meat in our diet. So rather than replacing meat with plant-based foods, lab-grown meat could very soon ease the pressure on the environment. Here’s an update from the meat labs.

You don't have a career. You have a life →

Read

I’ve linked to this before, but after the positive response to my intro in the previous issue of DD it’s worth sharing again: ‘Professionalism has become a destructive myth. Ditch it.’
