Talent hits a target no one else can hit, while genius hits a target that no one else can see.

Welcome to Issue 8!

View/share online

Thank you for the many emails you sent in response to my questions about promoting this newsletter in the previous issue! I've made a list of things that seem doable and will slowly work on implementing them. Then perhaps at the end I'll write up a short post on what worked and what didn't – which was also one of your suggestions: to write more about what I'm doing.

As a first step, I've made some tweaks to the newsletter to encourage you to share each issue more widely. You can now find a URL at the bottom of each issue for posting on Twitter, forwarding via email or sharing on your company Slack.

I'd also like to add some reader reviews to the DD website. If you have something nice to say about DD and don't mind tweeting about it, please do! (Don't forget to @ Dense Discovery.) I'll be giving away a handful of codes for discounted copies of Offscreen among those who tweet about DD. – Kai

Consently →

Get user consent before loading trackers

Speaking of trackers, Consently is a nice little tool that makes it easier for website owners to get documented consent from their visitors while offering them a granular opt-in to third party scripts.

Short Menu →

Powerful URL shortener

If you share a lot of content through URL shorteners, this app for Mac and iOS could come in useful: load multiples services like bitly, Google, Droplr, CloudApp etc. and generate short URLs through shortcuts from any app.

MacBook Alarm →

Does what it says on the tin: when this app is turned on, closing the lid or disconneting the power plug will sound a loud alarm, aiming to discourage thieves stealing your laptop while you're getting your seventh flat white for the day.

Asked & Answered

❏

Three questions for: Tracy Chou, software engineer, adviser, and advocate for diversity

What concept do you wish more people would know about?

All the different types, dimensions, and intersections of privilege and how those affect people personally and societally.

What's your secret super power?

Speed reading. I usually read 50+ books per year. It's a brilliant shortcut to be able to fill my head with the thoughts of the smartest, most insightful and creative thinkers.

What one person or organisation should our readers follow on Twitter?

@projectinclude: we keep up a steady stream of tweets about diversity and inclusion in tech. I also find @mikeisaac hilarious though I feel a little bit bad for recommending a white man for yet another thing.

Goods & Accessories

❏

Keytron →

Ultra-slim wireless mechanical keyboard

For you keyboard geeks out there: “The Keytron is a wireless mechanical keyboard with low profile switches in an ultra-slim design. Compatible with Windows or Mac, the Keytron keyboard features RGB light, wired or wireless mode, it can connect up to 3 devices simultaneously.”

The Every Day Calendar →

Habit tracker for your wall

Robot enthusiast and YouTube star Simone Giertz built herself an electronic wall calendar to keep track of her meditiation habits. And now you can order one for yourself too on Kickststarter. It's a great-looking product and I love Simone's work, but I can't help but wonder: do we really need another resource-hungry, electricity-consuming device for something apps or even paper can do just as well?

Overheard on Twitter

To me the most amazing thing about the universe is that if you take a bunch of hydrogen and leave it alone, 13.7 billion years later a small lump of that same matter will have the idea to sell hot fresh Nutella donuts right on my doorstep. Physics, y’all.

Food For Thought

No More “Struggle Porn” →

Read

Nat Eliason is speaking out against the “masochistic obsession with pushing yourself harder, listening to people tell you to work harder, and broadcasting how hard you’re working.”

The Bullshit Web →

Read

“With an internet connection faster than I could have thought possible in the late 1990s, what’s the score now? A story at the Hill took over nine seconds to load; at Politico, seventeen seconds; at CNN, over thirty seconds. This is the bullshit web.”

An Alternative History of Silicon Valley Disruption →

Read

The disruption Silicon Valley is selling us may not be the kind of disruption we really want: “They promised the open web, we got walled gardens. They promised individual liberty, then broke democracy – and now they’ve appointed themselves the right men to fix it.”

How nationalism and globalism can coexist →

Watch

“Why do we have to choose between nationalism and globalism, between loving our countries and caring for the world?” I've been thinking about this a lot lately. A great talk that puts both sides into perspective aiming to find a moderate middle ground.
